Introduction to NVC from Marshall Rosenberg
NVC Practitioners in Hawaii
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) was originated by Marshall Rosenberg (1934 – 2015) over a period of about 40 years, as he dedicated his life to understanding what separates us and connects us, what brings us to violence and what brings us to resolution and peaceful coexistence.
During that time he discovered that when we identify, understand and connect to our universal human needs and values, rather than diagnosing and judging, we have a much greater ability to understand one another in a way that empowers us to resolve conflict without violence.
Nonviolent Communication is the name given to the concepts and practices that Marshall originated to help us think, speak and hear others with a focus on needs. This in turn, empowers us to relate to ourselves and one another with compassion and ultimately to create more peace in our lives and in our world.
“The objective of NVC is not to change people and their behavior in order to get our way. It is to establish relationships based on honesty and empathy which will eventually fulfill everyone’s needs.”

We Have the Ability to Impact Our Future, and We’re Doing Something About It
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) can be used in any interaction. It helps us develop practical skills in using language, awareness and listening to communicate in ways that inspire understanding of ourselves and others.
When we experience conflict, the NVC process can help create resolutions that are satisfying for everyone involved without painful compromise or sacrifice.
NVC, also known as Compassionate Communication, offers concrete tools for replacing criticism, defensiveness and disconnection with an experience in which everyone matters.
Hawaii NVC is a collaboration of teachers, practitioners and learners supporting the awareness and use of Nonviolent Communication throughout the Hawaiian Islands. We are connected to a global network of NVC practitioners operating on all continents throughout the world.
